The Canon M50 is the best vlogging camera!

Last updated June 2, 2018

After owning and using the Canon M50 for the last few weeks, I can say it’s truly a great value and a marvelous tool for vloggers.  Right now it is on sale on for $200 off!  This deal will NOT last long, especially since this camera was just recently released!

The previous best Vlogging Camera (IMO) is the Canon G7x Mark II.  Which still has it’s PROS and CONS over the Canon M50.  Personally, I have both the Canon G7x Mark II and the Canon M50, and feel they both have their unique purpose, while both overlap as the best Vlogging Cameras out there.

Canon G7x Mark II PROS: everything is builtin, and thus making it easy and error-proof to turn on and start recording.  The G7x Mark II can fit in my jeans pocket!

Canon G7x Mark II CONS: 24mm-100mm effective focal length sometimes isn’t wide enough.  Has a slow and dated autofocus system, does not have an external microphone jack.

Canon M50 PROS: Has the best Autofocus system in the market today, has an External Microphone Jack, has better lowlight capabilities.

Canon M50 CONS: larger than the G7x Mark II, and cannot fit in my jeans pocket anymore.

NOTE: It’s great for 1080p vlogging.  Although it does have the capabilities to record 4K@24fps, this mode is not ideal for vlogging because in 4K mode the camera does not have the Dual Pixel AF system enabled (it goes back to terrible contrast detection), the other disadvantage in 4K is that it adds a 1.6x crop factor (which makes it tricky to get wide shots since you now have an effective 2.56 crop factor). With the effective 2.56x crop factor, the widest EF-M lens, the 11-22mm lens, effective will be a 28.2-56.3mm.
Here's are 11 reasons why this is the perfect camera for vlogging!
  1. Amazing Dual Pixel AF, this is the best autofocus system on any camera right now!  The face tracking mode works wonders (in 1080p mode).  This is the same autofocus system found in Canon’s flagship Canon 1Dx Mark II, a $6000 camera!
  2. It has a flip-out Screen, so you can see yourself, check exposure, check battery life, make sure you are ACTUALLY recording!
  3. It has an external microphone jack for better audio.  I personally use the Rode Video Mic Pro, but the Rode Video Micro, or the Rode Video MicGo all work great too!
  4. Even if you don’t use an external Microphone, the on-camera Microphone is actually really good!
  5. It’s compact and lightweight!  If you detech the lens, it can easily fit in your jacket pocket!
  6. It can capture 1080p at 60fps or 30fps, and it can do 720p at 120fps for some sweet slow motion!
  7. Has great low light capabilities and ability to create creamy blurry backgrounds using the APS-C sensor (which is a 1.6x crop sensor, the same sensor found in the Canon 80D, a $1200 camera).
  8. It’s priced very well.  The Canon M50 with the EF-M 15-45mm Imaged Stabilized Lens retails for $899, but Canon usually puts these on sales twice a year for around $699!  Check Amazon for the latest price.
  9. You have lens options!  For $400, you can get the EF-M 11-22mm Imaged Stabilized Lens which is even better for vlogging if you want to capture a wider shot (although the kit lens, the 15-45mm lens works fine for vlogging).  Another option, if you want some nice blurry background effect and/or better low light capabilities, you can check out the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2.0 for about $250.
  10. The batteries (Canon LP-E12) are small, you can fit a few in your pocket!  Each can last about 1.5 to 2 hours of video recording per battery.  They take about 2 hour to fully charge.
  11. The camera uses SD cards which are inexpensive and compact!  The SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD cards are the best bang for the buck, but they also come in 256GB and 512GB.  Personally I use a MicroSD card with an adapter since I have a lot of MicroSD cards which I use in my Mavic Pro, GoPro Cameras, and other devices.
  12. As with any Canon camera, the Canon Color science always looks great!
  13. If you add a EF-M to EF lens adapter, you can attach ANY of Canon EF lens lineup!  Like the Canon 15mm Fisheye, 24mm L Mark II f/1.4, Canon 50mm f/1.2 L, Canon 85mm f/1.2 L Mark II, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS Mark II, just to name of few of my favorites!

Everything about the Canon 1Dx Mark II

When the original Canon 1Dx was launched, we purchased 4 of them for our wedding photography business (www.dKweddings.net)!  Infact, we preordered them, and when they didn’t arrive soon enough, we purchased a few Canon 5D Mark III at the time to hold us over until the 1Dx arrived  Long story short, the Canon 1Dx has worked wonders for our photography, we were thrilled with the camera so much that even with he introduction of the 1Dx Mark II, we didn’t feel the need to upgrade at that time.

However, it’s been 1.5 year since the launch of the 1Dx Mark II, and the price of the Mark II has gone down (from the $6500 MSRP).  Also the price of Cfast cards have gone down dramatically as well.  So I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Canon 1Dx Mark II!  It has been a dream camera of mine, and now I have it!

This blog post will contain the reasons why I bought the camera as well as all the details about it I’ve collected over the internet to answer all my questions while using the camera.

Reasons why I upgraded my Canon 1Dx to the Mark II!
  1. It has amazing autofocus while recording videos!
  2. Improved video resolution and frame rates: 1080P at 120fps, as well as 4k at 60fps!
  3. It has better autofocus for photos too!
  4. It has improved low light capabilities, with native ISO as high as 51,000; this beast seriously has night vision!
  5. It has a much beefier battery that lasts much longer.

Below are some answers to questions I was looking to buy the Canon 1Dx Mark II, as well as questions I had after I bought it.

Canon I use the old Canon LP-E4 or Canon LP-E4n with the 1Dx Mark II?
YES!  Here’s the official answer from canon: “The EOS-1D X Mark II was launched with a new battery pack – the LP-E19 – that features a higher capacity to cope with the demands of the new camera. However, the LP-E19 can also be used in older EOS-1 series cameras as far back as the EOS-1D Mark III models. Equally, the previous batteries from the EOS-1D Mark III/IV and 1D X (LP-E4/N) can be used in the EOS-1D X Mark II. When using an older model battery in the EOS-1D X Mark II, you may notice the maximum drive speed is not a fast as expected. This is because the older batteries do not provide enough power, so the drive speed will drop from 14fps to around 12fps. If you need the fastest frame rate, you should stick with the LP-E19 battery pack.”
What's the max (non-extended ISO) can the Canon 1Dx Mark II be set to?
ISO 51,200, and it is superior to other Canon cameras like the Canon 5D Mark IV
How to do record at 120fps and what is needed?
Make sure your camera mode is switch the video (the hard switch on the back of the camera), then hit the MENU button and scroll through until you see the option that saids “Movie Rec Quality”.  Select that the “High Frame Rate” option.  You can shoot in 1080P without using a CFast card, but you need a really fast CF card.  I was able to shoot perfect 120fps video on my 256GB Lexar CF card, which does 160MB/sec
Anything else I need to know when shooting at 120fps?
Video is slightly cropped, and there is no audio being captured
Anything else I need to know when shooting 4K videos?
Video is slightly cropped, and it takes up a TON of space, so get those memory cards ready!
Where can I download the user's manual?

Right on Canon’s official Website: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/dslr/eos-1d-x-mark-ii?tab=manuals

What's the latest Firmware and what are the changes/update it provides?

You can download the latest version of the firmware on Canon’s website: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/dslr/eos-1d-x-mark-ii?subtab=downloads-firmware

As of writing this article the latest version is Version 1.1.6 and was released on March 3, 2018.

Here’s the documentation and change log from Canon’s documentation:

Changes in the Firmware
Firmware Version 1.1.6 incorporate the following fix:

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera may not function normally when images are simultaneously displayed on the camera’s LCD monitor and an external monitor (via HDMI output).

The Version 1.1.6 firmware being released at this time is for cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.4 or earlier. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.6, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
When updating the firmware of your camera, please first go over the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware.
The firmware update takes approximately six minutes.

Note:
(1) Once the EOS-1D X Mark II is updated to Version 1.1.4 (or later), it cannot be restored to a previous firmware version (Version 1.0.0 to 1.1.3).
(2) Camera settings files created using a camera running Firmware Version 1.0.2 (or earlier) cannot be used on a camera running Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later).
(3) Please use the latest EOS Utility version with the EOS-1D X Mark II after the camera has been updated to Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later). The latest version of EOS Utility can be downloaded from Canon’s Web site.
EOS Utility Version 3.5.00 or later support cameras running Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later)
(4) Accompanying functional improvements of Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later), the instructional manual has been revised. The latest version of the instruction manual can be downloaded from Canon’s Web site, so please download the instruction manual together with the new firmware.

Note that when using a CFast card formatted according to the above step 2, the following operations will take place.
– An “ImgSaver.bin” file of several MB in capacity will be created in the “MISC” folder on the card. Do not move or delete the folder or the file on the card.
– When opening the card slot cover, the access lamp may remain lit or blink for a longer duration.
Remove the card only after having confirmed that the access lamp is off. When the access lamp is lit or blinking, recording to the card is in progress.
Never perform the operations below when the access lamp is lit or blinking as doing so may result in corrupted image data or may cause damage to the card or the camera.
– Removing the card
– Removing the battery pack
– Applying vibration or shock to the camera
– Unplugging and replugging the power cord (when using the separately-sold household power outlet accessories)

When using SanDisk CFast cards, to fully utilize the card performance, use the refresh tool provided by SanDisk before formatting the card with a camera with the above step 1 applied.
Refresh tool: http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17370

In addition, if an affected SanDisk CFast card has already been formatted with a computer or another device, please format the card again with a camera with the above step 1 applied.

About the “Refresh Tool” of SanDisk cards:
Q1: Whenever the camera is used to format a SanDisk CFast card, is it mandatory to use the refresh tool? If the refresh tool is not used, will the bottom part of still images become corrupted?
A1: The refresh tool is not related to image corruption that appears at the bottom part of still images. The interests in vlogging cameras have been skyrocketing!

We’re seeing more and more video content everywhere on the Internet!  In this guide, you’ll finally be able to determine the best vlogging camera in 2022 for your needs!

As a wedding photographer (www.dKweddings.net) for nearly 10 years and as a Tech YouTuber (www.YouTube.com/UTECHPIA) for close a year now, I get asked the famous question “What is the Best Camera to buy” almost on a weekly basis!  Recently, people have been asking me “What is the Best Vlogging Camera to buy”!  So with cameras being a major part of my daily life, I’ve decided to write this blog post and hopefully help YOU find the perfect vlogging camera for your needs!

You can certainly use your cellphone to make awesome vlogs, but if you want to get a dedicated camera to step up your game, this guide is what you need to help you decide on your next vlogging camera.

Again, I want to re-iterate: Before you go further into this guide, if you’re just starting out vlogging and you’re limited on funds, focus on using your cell phone and creating great content. The nice things about using your cell phone is that it’s compact, always with you, not intrusive, and you already own it! The downside is that if you want to record lots of footage, you’ll find yourself quickly running out of batteries and storage.

Alright, so you’re serious about buying a dedicated camera for vlogging. This is a great idea because it will produce better quality videos. However, there is no “perfect” vlogging camera. You would think that camera manufactures would be racing to bring the perfect vlogging camera to the market, but sadly they are not there yet.  The good news is that there are tons of great cameras in the market, you just need to decide which features are important to you, this will help you determine the Best Vlogging Camera for your needs.

Vlogging Camera Buyer’s Guide:

SizeFlip-out ScreenMic JackAutoFocusResolutionFrameRateDurabilityPrice
The more compact a camera, the easier it is to bring along with you. Some cameras can fit the pocket of your jeans. Some will fit in a large purse. Others will require a larger camera backpack. I recommend getting the smallest camera that has all the features you need. Having a small camera means it is easier to go under the radar while vlogging in public. Also, having a small camera makes you less imitating when you point it at people; allowing for a more natural reaction. For me, the winner of this Category is easily the Canon G7x Mark II.
With Vlogging, it is extremely important to have a flip-out screen.  The screen will let you quickly see what is in focus and what is in your frame; it will also let you know in real time your camera exposure, as well as the simple things like remaining battery life, storage capacity, recording mode and recording status.  Some cameras have screens that flip up to the top, others have screens that flip out to the side.  I like the screens that flip out to the top a little better since it is less obvious when you have to look at the screen (pro tip, if you wear sunglasses, no one will know when you check yourself in the screen).  The screens that flip out to the top, unfortunately, does block your ability to mount an external microphone to the hotshoe (like the Canon M6, hence why I recommend the Canon M50 over the M6).  Some cameras even let you change focus points by tapping on the screen(like the Sony RX100 Mark V, Canon M50, Canon 80D, Canon 6D Mark II, and Canon 1Dx Mark II)!
Having an external Mic Jack on a camera means that you can choose to record with audio from the camera’s built-in microphone, or attach an external microphone to your camera.  Some cameras such as the Canon G7x Mark II and the Sony RX100 Mark V do not have a microphone jack, so you’re stuck with using the built-in microphone.  Typical built-in microphones have decent quality, but they are certainly not as good as a dedicated external microphone, especially in a noisy environment or when there is a lot of wind.  When creating videos, audio quality is just as important as than the video quality itself; you can have an amazing video, but having terrible audio will ruin the entire video!  So a great way to step up your vlogs is to have better audio. For me, the Canon M50 is a winner in this category, since it has both a very good built-in microphone and it has an easily accessible external Mic Jack.
Having fast and accurate Autofocus is extremely important for vlogging.  Ideally: when you point the camera to your face, it should detect your face and autofocus on your face right away; and when you hold up an object in front of your face, the camera should autofocus on the object.  Any of Canon’s modern camera that has the Dual Pixel Autofocus system will give you the best results, such as the Canon M50 (when shooting in 1080P, not 4K), Canon 80D, Canon 6D Mark II, and Canon 1Dx Mark II.  The second best auto focus system I found was the Sony RX100 Mark V. The cameras that have the slowest/poorest Auto Focus are the ones that uses the contrast detection system, which is what is found on the Canon G7x Mark II or when shooting at 4K on the Canon M50. Side note: Some of these cameras also have touch screens, which makes it nice to be able to tap the area you want to get in focus, combined this with a flip out screen like with the Canon M50, Canon 80D, or Canon 6D Mark II, and you have a solid setup for Vlogging; these three are all winners in this category for me.
For the ideal vlogging work flow, I recommend recording in 1080p because it produces decent video file sizes (storage consideration) and requires no more than just a standard computer to efficiently edit your videos.  If you wanted optimal YouTube video quality, you could record at 4k and edit your video in 4k; but personally, I don’t do this since it takes up tons of storage to record at 4k, and requires lots of computer processing time (which means it takes longer to edit and export your final video, even with the top of the line computers). Some cameras only record up to 1080p, which is fine, and much preferred by me. If you don’t have a very fast computer and/or have limited disk space, it is recommended to stick with 1080p footage. For reference a Canon 1Dx Mark II will take up 5,733Mb/minute when recording 4K @ is 60fps; but only takes up 87MB/minute when recording 1080P @ 30fps (compressed mode). That’s over 65 times the file size to record in 4k vs 1080p! On a separate note: Recording in 4k when you plan to export your final video in 1080p has a huge advantage if you want to be able to crop (aka zoom in) on your video during post-processing without losing quality (you can crop in up to roughly 4 times, and still not lose any quality).
30 frames per second (fps) is the typical sweet spot for YouTube. Some people videos at 24fps to have more of a cinematic feel. Some people like 60fps for very smooth videos (especially nice to have when you are capturing content with a lot of fast motion). I personally like using 30fps because it is the most efficient and the most common option on modern cameras. Another thing to consider: Do you want to have Slow Motion in your video?  If YES, then you’ll want to be able to record in 120fps or at least in 60fps.  The correct way to have sharp and clear slow motion footage is to record at a faster frame rate then what you will actually render your final video to be. For example, if your end result is a 30fps video, then should record at 60fps and when you slow it down by 50%, the resulting clip will now be at 30fps, which is what you want.  Let me break that down: say you had a 1-second footage recorded at 60fps, if you slow that down 50%, then you footage will now be a 2-second clip.  Since your final video will be 30fps, your 2 second clip needs 60 frames total, to look smooth.  Which is why you want to record the original 1-second clip at 60fps to be able to slow it down (50%) to a 2 second clip and still be at 30fps.  The end result: every frame used a the actual frames recorded and not computer generated, thus no added motion blur nor computer generated artifacts.
Do you need your camera to be waterproof? Are you going to get the camera near sand or dusty environments? Is the camera going to be in danger of getting physical impact while in use? Do you want to mount the camera on the exterior of a car going at 150+ miles per hour, in the rain? Or do you want to put the camera on your surfboard while crashing into gnarly waves?? If you need durability and/or waterproof features, you will want an action camera like to GoPro Hero 6.  The GoPro Hero 6 is the clear winner for this category; it’s even waterproof without any additional enclosure!  The least durable camera in the in the line up are the Point-and-Shoots that have retractable lens, like the Canon G7x Mark II and Sony RX100 Mark V; sand and water are their worse nightmare, and even slight impact on the extruded lens of these cameras can easily damage the camera requiring them to go back to the repair shop!
Of course, price matters, but everyone has a different budget. So the price will not affect the rating/scoring of the camera. If a camera has all the features you want, and you can afford it, then go for it, it will be “worth it” for YOU! When considering price you need to budget in the fact that cameras that have interchangeable lenses means you’ll have to buy lenses too, these can add up fast since a professional quality lens can cost thousands of dollars! You may also want to buy an external microphone, those cost money too. Don’t forget that the more expensive the camera, the more expensive the batteries and memory card will be too. The most inexpensive, all-in-one vlogging camera winner is the Canon G7x Mark II; no extra microphone or lens to buy.  If you want to have more flexibility and don’t mind paying a little more, the Canon M50 is a solid choice.  If price is of no concern, then the best vlogging camera with a flip-out screen is the Canon 6D Mark II.

Quick Summary: Let’s look at the options we have today, to find the Best Vlogging Camera in 2018 for your needs. I will continue to add to this list as new cameras get introduce in the market. For most compact and most inexpensive, I recommend the Canon G7x Mark II as a solid choice. If you’re willing to go a to a slightly larger camera to get the benefit of better Auto Focus and an external Mic Jack, I recommend the Canon M50. If you want the same great Dual Pixel Auto Focus system as the Canon M50 but want an even better image quality, then the Canon 6D Mark II is a premium choice (but limited to 1080P). The lens choices on the 6D Mark II uses EF lenses and they tend to cost a lot more than the consumer EF-S lens that are compatible with the Canon 80D. So the Canon 80D is also a nice sweet spot in terms of pro vlogging features at a decent price; it’s a very popular choice. The Canon 1Dx Mark II is the MOST premium option on the list, but does *not* have the flip-out screen, and is an overkill for vlogging. If you need water proof and a tough camera, the GoPro Hero 6 is my recommendation, although you don’t have a Flip Screen.

In a nut shell; I think the best vlogging cameras are the Canon G7x Mark II, Canon M50, and the Canon 6D Mark II; but the right choice for you really depends what you need. Here’s a table that will break down the features of each camera.

Comparison Table:

Canon G7x Mark II: UTECHPIA’s top pick

G7xII-01
G7xII-03
G7xII-04
G7xII-05
G7xII-06
G7xII-07
G7xII-08
G7xII-09
G7xII-02

The Canon G7x Mark II is easily my top pick because captures great video and decent sound with the onboard microphone, yet it’s still compact enough to fit in my jean pocket. The video quality is really good, although it is limited at 1080P at 60fps. The zoom lens has a nice f/1.8 aperture (widest setting when at 24mm) which works well in low light, and can zoom from 24mm to 100mm (full frame equivalent focal length). This built-in zoom lens in not a feature to be taken lightly, it’s actually a BIG deal because there does not exist any such lens that’s as good for any of the interchangeable lens camera in the market right now. This lens combined with its large 1 inch sensor also allows the camera to beautiful blurred background effects (aka “portrait mode” effect) while recording videos.

I love the flip out screen, because I can easily frame my shots, check my exposure, check my focus, and even use it to tap to focus! The screen can tilt as well, which can be useful when recording something down low, or when recording something way up high! The screen is smart too, it will rotate the image when it is flipped out! The auto focus is good, but not very fast and sometimes it hunts for focus when the subject lacks contrasts. Although it’s not as good as an autofocus system like the ones found on the newer Canon Cameras, it’s still very VERY Good!

This is a fantastic choice for a vlogger that wants something better than their cell phones in every way, and is still compact and pocketable, it is simple and work as you would expect!  This is the Best Vlogging Camera for many YouTubers today!  I love that this camera can fit in my jeans pocket, I almost always have it with me everywhere I go!

There’s a lot jammed packed into a small package here! The added fact that everything is built-in is that you don’t have to worry about “bringing and attaching lens and microphones, and batteries for the microphone”, you don’t even need to worry about removing the lens cap from the camera, it’s all automatic. All you need to do: Power on the camera, hit the record button (from ANY mode), and you’re vlogging! It is very fast, so you’re less likely to miss any moments.

This camera provides a lot of bang for the buck! It’s been on the market since May 2016, but it’s still the best vlogging camera compared to anything else that’s in the market right now!

When I’m not in the studio, I almost always use the G7x Mark II! It’s super compact and portable, I love having it with me. It would be the perfect camera if it had a microphone jack, better AF and could capture 4K video. Now if you want all those added features of a better AF, microphone jack, 4k recording, and even interchangeable lens, you can have it with cannon’s latest offering: Take a look at the Canon M50, which has all these missing features, the Canon M50 is tied for my vlogging camera TOP PICK as well!

PROS:
  • Compact, fits in my jean pocket!
  • Great in low light
  • Nice Flip out screen
  • Solid Battery life
  • Great Price
CONS:
  • No External Mic Jack
  • No 4K Resolution
  • Auto Focus is slow and inaccurate
  • The lens is a delicate mechanism and can easily get damaged with light impact

Canon M50: UTECHPIA’s top pick (tied)

M50-01
M50-04
M50-05
M50-03
M50-02
This is the Camera most vloggers have been waiting for! It seriously packs tons of features for an amazing price, it’s also relatively compact too! This camera is tied as my TOP pick. I have a hard time deciding between the Canon G7x Mark II and the Canon M50. The Canon M50 is a bit larger than the G7x Mark II, and requires the extra complexity of having an interchangeable lens. Here’s where the M50 shines, it has an incredible auto-focus system (aimilar video auto-focus performance to the one in Canon’s top of the line 1Dx Mark II which sells for $6000)!, it has an external microphone jack, it has a flip-out screen, and it can record in 4k! However, note that it’s 4k recording mode adds a 1.6x crop and goes back to the old non-reliable contrast detection auto-focus system (even worse than that of the G7x Mark II)!

So if you want a really good vlogging camera for 1080P video, you can’t go wrong with the Canon M50.  It get’s the title of the Best Vlogging Camera, in my book!

To make the most out of the Canon M50, you’ll want to find the ultimate lens for your needs, maybe you want several lens depending on your needs. Don’t forget to get a really nice microphone to take advantage of the external microphone jack as well!

If you want to have something a little more compact and simpler (just point and shoot, don’t need to worry about which lens to use and which microphone to attach); the get the older Canon G7x Mark II, which has been my primary Vlogging camera since 2015!

The Canon M50 is one of the most popular vlogging camera right now!
I recommend using it with the following lens:

  • Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 STM Lens (works out to be 18mm-35mm full frame equivalent focal length, perfect for vlogging).
  • Canon EF-M 22mm f2 STM Compact System Fixed Lens (works out 35mm, perfect for low light and getting a beautiful background blur @ f/2.0)

The two microphones that will pair well are:

  • Rode VMGO Video Mic GO Lightweight On-Camera Microphone Super-Cardioid
  • Rode VideoMic Pro Compact VMP Shotgun Microphone

Canon M50 vs M6: The Canon M50 is frequently compared with the Canon M6.  Both are currently the same price and have very similar features.  However, for use as a vlogging camera, the M50 meets and beats everything that the M6 has to offer.

The PROs that the M50 offers over the M6: I like that the M50 screen flips out to the side so that you can mount an external microphone on top, whereas the M6 screen flips out to the top which limits your options to mount an external microphone. The M50 can do 4k video (with bad autofocus, but it’s great with manual focus), and it can do 120fps at 720p (no auto focus, and no sound, but, hey 120fps is nice!), whereas the M6 doesn’t offer these video capturing modes.  Lastly, if you wanted to use your cell phone to control the camera, the M50 can be fully controllable via your cell phone, whereas the M6 is very limited in this area.

Here’s a video where I tested out the amazing Autofocus (when recording in 1080p mode):

PROS:
  • Excellent Auto Focus
  • Flip out Screen
  • External Mic Jack
  • Good Low Light Performance, especially with the right lens
  • Uses EF-M lenses, and with adapter it can use EF and EF-S Lenses too
  • Canon Capture 4k @ 24 fps, 1080P at 60fps, 720p at 120fps (no sound, no autofocus)
  • Although limited choices, the EF-M lenses are relatively cheaper then EF-S lenses and much cheaper than EF lenses (in general)
CONS:
  • When shooting 4K video, it adds a 1.6x crop factor, 2.56x total crop factor.
  • When shooting 4K, Auto Focus is no reliable
  • Entry Level build quality

Sony RX100 Mark V: Small camera with tons of features

RX100V5-06
RX100V5-07
RX100V5-08
RX100V5-09
RX100V5-10

This camera is physically the same size as the Canon G7x Mark II; it has most of the same features with some variations. It has a better autofocus system than the G7x Mark II, and it has 4K video capabilities. However, the G7x Mark II has a wider angle (better for vlogging), and the G7x Mark II has a touch screen which can be used to select the auto focus points. The G7x Mark II performs a tad better in low light condition than the RX100 Mark V. I’m talking a lot about the G7x Mark II, because that’s my top pick in this category.

Some vloggers on YouTube love and use the RX100 Mark V.  It is considered the Best Vlogging camera by many because it’s compact, has a flip-out screen, has solid autofocus, can do slow motion, and even record 4K video!  NOTE: I personally wouldn’t recommend it it due to the overheating issue.

Given the fact that Sony’s RX100 Mark V has lots of known overheating issue, rules it out completely for me. The overheating happens the most when recording in 4k, but it can also happen in 1080P too. When the camera overheats, it will simply stop recording; and I think that’s just unacceptable when you are recording a vlog and must capture the spontaneous moments!

PROS:
  • Does 4K Resolution
  • Solid Auto Focus
  • Can fit in my jean pocket!
CONS:
  • overheats, especially in 4K
  • Sometimes overheats, in 1080P as well, so I suggest avoiding this camera
  • The widest angle, is still a little tight, compared to the Canon G7x Mark II
  • No External Mic Jack

GoPro Hero 6: The choice for extreme conditions!

GoProHero6-01
GoProHero6-02
GoProHero6-06
GoProHero6-07
GoProHero6-05
GoProHero6-03
GoProHero6-04

The GoPro Hero 6 is the smallest camera on the lineup. It’s very durable camera, the most durable camera I’ve ever used. It’s also waterproof and thus perfect for capturing action while being right in the action! This camera would NOT be a good choice for a vlogging camera because it doesn’t have a flip-out screen, or does it have a good on-board audio microphone. However, it would greatly compliment any other vlogging camera (or your cell phone) and add amazing footage that is unique and very different. It’s got a super wide angle and is super durable; and since everything is always in focus, you can put the camera just about anywhere and get some interesting perspective (mount it really high up, really down low, underwater, etc). I personally love mounting these on my cars (using a Fat Gecko Mount) and getting some fantastic footage. It’s got pretty solid battery life (I got around 2+ hours recording at 1080p @ 30 fps) and can continue record until the battery dies out. This is also ideal for capturing time-lapse in a set & forget location. T he audio quality and video quality is on par when compared to smartphones. It doesn’t have a flip out screen, nor good audio quality, nor good low light capabilities.

For action vlogs, where you will subject your camera to extreme conditions, or want something really small that doesn’t get in the way of your action activity.  Then there is no finer choice than the GoPro Hero 6  It get’s the title of the Best Vlogging Camera, for people into action!
PROS:
  • Compact, I can fit two of these in my jean pocket!
  • Everything is in focus and sharp
  • Great wide angles
  • Extremely durable, shock and waterproof
  • Has Microphone input, BUT requires GoPro Adapter
  • does 4K @ 60fps, does 1080P @ 240fps
CONS:
  • No Flip out screen
  • Poor Low light capabilities
  • No Mic jack, poor built in audio quality
  • You don’t get the nice “portrait lens” effect, since everything is in focus.

Canon 80D: Popular Choice For Pro Vlogging!

Canon80D-01
Canon80D-02
Canon80D-03
Canon80D-04
Canon80D-05
Canon80D-07
Canon80D-06
The Canon 80D has been a very popular Vlogging camera because of the quality it provides at the given price point.  However, the shear size of this thing makes it harder to cary around, and you will get tons of attention when using this camera in public.  You have a wide selection of EF-S and EF lenses to use.  Note: if you’re looking in the Canon 80D, I would highly suggest looking at the Canon 6D Mark II instead.  The Canon 80D (1.6x crop sensor) and Canon 6D Mark II (full frame sensor) are pretty close in features; but the full frame of the 6D Mark II will take your video quality to the NEXT level, you get better shallow depth of field, better low light capabilities, and better video quality.   NOTE: The Canon 80D is a little bit smaller and lighter than the 6D Mark II.

This camera has been labeled as the Best Vlogging Camera by a lot of YouTubers for many years.  However, with more options in the market today, I would highly recommend considering the alternative: Go with the Canon M50 for more portability or go with the Canon 6D Mark II for better features and image quality!
PROS:
  • Excellent Auto Focus
  • Flip out Screen
  • External Mic Jack
  • Very good Low Light Performance
  • Canon use EF-S lense as well as EF lenses
CONS:
  • No 4K
  • Medium sized Camera, it’s bulky
  • Requires medium priced lenses investment

This is a camera that was long awaited for. This camera combined a full frame sensor with a flip-out screen. Of course being a high end DSLR, it includes the external microphone jack. It’s got the latest and greatest Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus System, providing exceptional autofocus ability. The full frame sensor means excellent low light performance as well! Combined the full frame sensor with the right EF lens and you can get the most beautiful shallow depth of field and creamy bokeh you dream of!

This camera is really a sweet spot, for excellent cinematic quality video. A vlogger’s dream with the Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus System, full-frame sensor, external microphone jack, and a 3″ flip-out touch screen!  This is the Best Vlogging Camera for someone that’s focused on getting the best results without regards to portability nor price.  Casey Neistat has recently switched the Canon 6D Mark II!

There was a lot of hope that if this had 4k video, then it would be the perfect vlogging camera (although still physically very large); but Canon let us down, as this doesn’t have 4K video. If you need 4K on a full frame body, you’ll have to move up to the Canon 1Dx Mark II, which sadly doesn’t have a flip-out screen.

PROS:
  • Excellent Auto Focus
  • Flip out Screen
  • External Mic Jack
  • Strong Low Light Performance
  • Large Sensor, nice shallow Depth of Field
CONS:
  • No 4K
  • Medium sized Camera, it’s bulky, slightly bulky than the 80D
  • Requires expensive lens investment, EF Lenses

As an all-in-one camera that takes amazing photos and amazing 4K cinematic video, this is the ultimate camera! Yes, it is the BEST photography camera Canon makes, this is what professional sports photographers, this is what high end wedding photographers use! The video capabilities is through the roof, in terms of Canon DSLR goes. It’s got the best Auto Focus system of any Camera right now, Canon nails it with the Dual Pixel CMOS AF & Movie Servo AF for high speed, high frame rate and continuous auto-focus during video shooting! It can capture 4K video at 60fps and 1080p at a smooth 120 fps. The camera body is built like a tank and can withstand a harsh conditions (although it is not waterproof). Okay, the biggest disappointment here for vloggers is the lack of a flip-out LCD screen, and obviously the MSRP price of $6000. Although it is considerably less on Amazon right now!

The is the Best Vlogging camera for someone that wants 1 camera that does everything, including taking amazing photos too!  It’s big, built like a tank, has amazing video capabilities (120fps at 1080p and 60fps at 4k!), and yet doesn’t have a flip-out LCD screen.  I personally use it for my YouTube video when I’m in the studio because it is robust and produces amazing results each and every time.  I own this camera since I use it for wedding photography as well, but if it wasn’t for my wedding photography need, I would be just as happy with the Canon 6D Mark II for in studio YouTube videos.
PROS:
  • Excellent Auto Focus
  • Top Of the Line Photography Camera
  • External Mic Jack
  • Strong Low Light Performance
  • Large Sensor, nice shallow Depth of Field
  • Professional Body, built like a Tank
  • Resistant to dust, mist, and splash.
  • Has 4K Video
  • Amazing Battery life (1 charge can record ~3 hours of 4K!)
CONS:
  • No Flip-out screen, no tilting screen.
  • Large size Camera, it’s bulky, and heaviest of them all
  • Requires lens investment
