Apple AirPods – Worth it? – Reviewed & Loved by an Audiophile

Are Apple Airpods worth $159?

Cutting to the chase, Yes! They are awesome wireless ear buds with good sound quality and excellent connectivity.

They are compact and work like magic! I’ve had them for 2 weeks now and I really love them, and I think every iPhone user should have a set (especially if you haven an iPhone 7 or newer because you can take advantage of the W1 chipset allowing pairing to happen instantly)

Let’s talk about the features, both good and bad

Features:
  • They look a little goofy.
  • The sound quality is nothing better than the standard wired apple earphones that come with the iPhones.
  • They connect just fine to my MacBook, however, I notice a slight delay when using it on my Mac, this makes it NOT ideal for editing video. I don’t notice this delay when connecting to my iPhone.
  • They are easy to use, just open the case and they are connected to your apple devices. The very first time, and anytime after that. They also sync with your apple ID, so they are automatically paired to all my apple devices!
  • To turn them off you put them in the case, which also charges them. I don’t think about changing them because they last a long time and they are always charging when they are off and in the case. You charge the case up, and the case can provide 24 hours of charge to the AirPods, the AirPods themselves hold 5 hour of charge at time. If you run out of juice on the AirPods, you can pop them in the case for 15 minutes and get 3 hour of listening time.
  • They are super compact and easy for travel. I find myself always carrying them around with me.
  • They are truly wireless and that goes a long way; the freedom they provide is something that you just have to experience to really appreciate.
  • If you remove one of the ear buds, it will pause your video or music, and once you put back the ear bud, your video or music will resume playing again! This is a very convenient feature!
  • They fit amazingly well, I can run and do tons of physical activities and they never fall off. Of course, this depends on the shape of your ear. These AirPods are pretty much identical to the shape of the typical Apple wired Earphones that come with the iPhones, so if they fit the same way.
  • You can configure double tap on each individual air pod to either activate Siri, Play/Pause, go to the Next Track, Previous Track, or turn off that periarticular bud. I like to set my right ear bud double tap to go to the Next Track, and the left ear bud double tap to go to the previous track.
  • Oh yeah, I and if you want to use the AirPods to answer phone calls, they work perfectly well, my wife couldn’t tell the difference when I used the AirPods vs talking directly on the phone!

 

PROS:
  • Easy to Sync/Connect EVERYTIME
  • Solid 5hr Battery Life w/ Charging Case
  • Small & Compact, even with case
  • Auto Stop/play feature
  • Fits super well (subjective)
  • Stays attached even when laying down
CONS:
  • Look a little goofy.
  • Sound Quality is same as Wired Apple EarBuds
  • Has slight audio delayed for Mac/PC

Things I wish it had:

Room For Improvements:
  • The one feature I wish it could include would be to be able to provide a slide up and slide down gesture on the AirPods to adjust the volume, that would have been awesome!
Conclusion: Are they Worth it?
So for $159, I think these are awesome to have, especially if you have an iPhone 7 or newer device, I totally recommend them. If you have an older apple device or an android device, they will still work via standard Bluetooth, but you lose the instant connecting features of the W1 chipset.; which is a big part of the appeal for me. Bottom line: I used to travel with my Bose QC15 headphones, which I LOVE for the sound quality and noise cancelling abilities, but they are bulky, and I would much rather travel with the AirPods. These are so compact and convenient to use, that I find myself using them all the time. How to jailbreak the iPhone X and Should I jailbreak? Is it Illegal? Is it Safe? Is it Worth it?

Wow, I can’t believe this day is finally here! In this video! I’ll be showing you how I jailbreak my iPhone X! This also works on all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 11.0-11.1.2

I really like the iPhone X, but without a jailbreak, there’s hardly any customization available. With jailbreaking, there are lots of 3rd party apps that I can install which can provide new functionalities and tweaks that apple does not allow.

jailbreaking is 100% legal. Thanks to the exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in 2012 which made jailbreaking phones legal. The exemption as later expanded in 2015 to include tablets too!

Although jailbreaking is 100% legal, you lose the security you get with Apple Products, because with a Jailbroken device, you’re pretty much trusting all these 3rd party apps which haven’t been approved by Apple.

This jailbreak is provided by Electra and it works for all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 11.0-11.1.2. I’m extremely thankful for the developers of this jailbreak, they’re awesome!

There have been several versions out, and this is the MOST stable one, by far. (Version 1.0.4). Check the link in the description for the latest version.

REQUIREMENT TO Jailbreak:

#1) Your device MUST have a iOS version of 11.0 to 11.1.2. If you don’t already have this iOS version; there is no way to download it now, sorry. If you have iOS 11.2 through 11.2.2, there is still a chance that they will have the jailbreak for newer iOS version soon!

#2) You need a computer running Windows, OS X, or Linux. Go ahead and download the Electra jailbreak IPA file and the Cydia Impactor. The Cydia Impactor is a tool that we will use to load the Electra jailbreak IPA file on to your iOS device). Links to the files are in the description below.

#3) You need a USB cable to connect your phone to your computer.

Alright, moving forward! Let’s get my iPhone X jailbroken.

So my iPhone X is on iOS 11.1; which is compatible with this jailbreak.
I’ll be using my MacBook Pro to install the jailbreak, but you can do this with a computer running Windows or Linux.

Step 1:

Plug your device into the computer and TRUST the device. If iTunes opens up, make sure you close it.

Step 2:

Open the Cydia Impactor. Drag the Electra jailbreak IPA onto the Cydia Impactor application.

You’ll be prompted for an “Apple ID Username”. (It does NOT need to be associated with a developer’s membership license. If you’ve enabled Apple’s Two-factor Authentication, you’ll get this error, just like I did.

Simply go to appleid.apple.com, login, and go to the section on “App-Specific Passwords” and generate a password. You can enter anything for the password label, I’ll use UTECHPIA.

Now you have the password you need to continue.

Let’s try this again: drag the jailbreak IPA on to the Cydia Impactor, enter your apple ID , and then for the password, use the app-specific password we just generated.

This loads the Electra jailbreak app on to your apple device.

Step 3:

You should now see the Electra jailbreak App on your Apple device. Go ahead an open it and run the jailbreak. The version that I’m currently using is version 1.0.4

After the jailbreak is complete, it will restart the apple device. Once it restarts, you should now have Cydia installed.

Go ahead and open Cydia. It will ask you to upgrade essential packages, select to “Upgrade Essential” Option. From what I’ve heard you do NOT want to do the Complete Upgrade, as this is causing problems for a lot of people. Once the essentials are done installing, it will close out of Cydia. Open Cydia back up, the final step is to search for the “Tweak Injector” by CoolStar and upgrade to the latest version.

Congrats!

You’ve now got a jailbreak iOS device! There are TONS of tweaks you can install.

If you search the internet, there are tons of Repositories that you can add to your Cydia store, and download awesome 3rd party apps!

The video is broke down into 4 parts:

1. Finding your niche
2. Networking and growing subscribers
3. Making the BEST Videos you can
4. Video Search Optimization (making it so that people will find your videos)

1. Finding your Niche. You need to pick a focus and stick with it. I’ve created other YouTube channels before, I tried to do a daily vlog, motivational videos, fitness videos, life hacks video, and I even vlog about food, but I rather just eat…. and through it all I found that I naturally enjoy doing tech videos that most. So that’s what I stuck with.

2. NETWORKING and growing your subscribers: Growing your first 100 subscribers. The first 100 subscribers was very difficult for me too, after I asked all my family, friends, and co-workers to subscribe, I was still at around 11 subscribers for weeks! Then I started to network with other YouTubers and it helped a lot. I would subscribe to Luther youtubers channels and asked if they would subscribe to my channel. This is called Sub4Sub, and it’s frequently frown upon, because people typically do it just for the numbers and not for the networking aspect. Sub4Sub can get your channel terminated if you do it just for the numbers and not networking aspect! My advice is find new YouTubers who make videos that are in your niche; subscribe to their channel and build a friendship with them, so you can help each other out. Seriously, take the time to watch each other’s videos and comment with good genuine feedback so you can both grow. This is a big part of how is how UTECHPIA grew, and I think it is very hard to grow without doing this. Once you get to about 100 subscribers, then you should focus more on creating content.

3. START Making videos as SOON as possible, and make videos as OFTEN as possible. Don’t wait until you get to 100 subscribers, start making videos right away. Don’t expect your videos to be perfect, because they WILL not be. This was the hurdle for me because I’m a perfectionist and kept re-recording my videos. So don’t worry about being perfect. The more videos you make, the better you will get.

4. How to get people to FIND your videos? YouTube is a big Giant Search Engine.

You have to learn how to make videos that people will search for. In the Tech Word, that’s talking about the hottest technology, doing a HowTo or Comparison video usually works best, where as unboxing and reviews are typically over saturated and won’t get as many views. Also, in the tech world, you can stay up to date about the news from top blog sites, this will give you an edge so you can make videos about the latest news. These types of videos are often searched for.

You also have to know how to make the video title, description, and tags optimize for search results. I use two tools, TubeBuddy and vidIQ (links in the description below). They are FREE tools that allow help me create tags, and it also shows me the tags that other competing videos use. They also contain a lot of analytical tools that help understand your videos as well as other YouTuber’s videos.

Alright, so you have a great video, have excellent video title, descriptions and tags, the next thing to do:

You also need a great thumbnail: Once your video comes up in the search results, it is your thumbnail that determines if your video gets clicked on. I spend a lot of time to create my thumbnail, because I believe it’s very important. The thumbnail should have an interesting picture and also include clear and easy to read text, IMO.
Lastly, Don’t neglect the Comments people write. Make sure you’re always responding to your comments, if you don’t’ have time, at least heart them. Audience Engagement will help your video rank. You also want to share your videos on your facebook, other social media, online community like Reddit, Quora and on forums that are specific the your video topic.

Mavic Air vs Mavic Pro – 10 Reasons why I WANT the Mavic Air!

The specs are out!  I’m truly excited for the DJI Mavic Air!  These are the 10 reasons why I WANT it!

 

I think it’s the perfect drone, and a worthy upgrade to my Mavic Pro.

 

Here are my reasons:

1.

POCKET-ABILITY of the Drone – It’s actually Pocket-able.  This makes it super practical to take anywhere, therefore, I will probably end up using it WAY more than my Mavic Pro.  For this reason alone, I think it’s a great tool to have.

In the DJI presentation, this guy was carrying not 1, not 2, but 3 Mavic Air and a remote control as well as his phone and wallet, all in his jacket!

It’s half the size of the Mavic Pro and 41% lighter!

It’s like having your cell phone on you all the time and being able to capture a great photo when the opportunity arises.   Now, with the Mavic Air, you can pull the drone out from your pocket, launch it to the sky, capture your footage, and pop it back in your pocket when you’re done.  This thing is a game changer just because it’s so compact and portable.

2.

POCKET-ABILITY of the controller – They even redesigned the controller.  Although it doesn’t have a screen like the Mavic Pro, it’s more compact and the joysticks are removable, so can fold up into a super portable form that fits in your pocket.

3.

Improved Quality Video and Added HDR Photos – From the test footage that people have been posting all over the internet, the 4K 30FPS video footage looks BETTER than the Mavic Pro, this is probably because it has a much higher Bit rate (100Mbits/sec vs 60Mbits/sec on the Mavic Pro)!  It can also do 1080P at 120FPS for amazing slow motion.  And it can take photos at 12MP with HDR feature.   With photos in the air, you’re dealing with the bright sky and dark area in the shadows all at once.  Thanks to the improved HDR processing capabilities, it can capture details in both the bright and dark areas!

4.

Better Sensors and software, making it harder to crash. The Mavic Air has sensors in the front, button, and back (where as the Mavic Pro does not have the back sensor).  So this makes flying backwards with the Mavic Air a lot safer,.  A lot of drone owners (myself included) loves flying backwards.  With the Mavic Air, it has advance avoidance mode (which uses a 7 camera vision system), DJI calls this the Fight Autonomy 2.0 System.  The Mavic Air will create a 3D map of the environment and using its new Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems (APAS) it will be able to intelligently move around obstacles instead of just stopping in front of them

This will allow beginners to have more confident flying the drone.  And it will open doors to pros who want to live on the edge, and  fly closer to obstacles to get more interesting shots.

5.

New 32MP Panorama Spherical mode.  Basically takes 25 high resolution photos and stiches them together to make this awesome Panorama spherical photo!  The result looks really cool!  And you can pan the photo in 360!

6.

Active Track mode is Improved – The Active Track is feature where the drone will follow a subject you pick.  The tracking modes are sweet, it can track the subject in many ways, such as moving around the subject, moving in front of subject, or follows the subject from behind.  Now it has been improved so it can detect up to 16 selectable subjects, and the algorithms have been upgrade for better tracking!   These modes help create professional drone footage while you are running, jumping, cycling, driving in a car, or doing other exciting activities.

7.

Additional QuickShot mode. The quick shot modes can maneuver the drone through a complicate path while capture the 10 second clip with the tap of a button.  Now, we have two new quick shot modes with the Mavic Air!  The two new ones are Asteroid and Boomerang,

Asteroid uses a Panorama Spherical mode along with a path movement to create a unique perspective.

Boomerang captures an awesome reveal path that looks extremely professional.  To get this kind of shot manually would require two operators, one to fly the drone in this precise motion and one to control the camera angle; and it would literally take hundreds of hours to get it so perfectly smooth like this.  Now, you can do this with a push of a button!

8.

Redesigned for the better:

  1. The 3-Axis Gimbal has been improved to reduced vibrations

  2. The camera housing is now recessed providing better protection.

9.

Gesture Controls are improved; basically you can, launch, land, and control the drone with your palm of your hands and command it to take a photo or start recording.  Now you can take a group selfie without holding the controller!

10.

Cheaper than the Mavic Pro!

For $799 you get the basic package which comes with drone, one battery, the charger, Protective case, propeller guards, and a remote controller.

For $999 the Fly More Combo comes with additional set of propellers, 2 extra batteries, a folding changing hub that can charge 4 batteries, and a shoulder bag.

Now, there are disadvantage compared to the Mavic pro

 

The first disadvantage:

  1. It is nosier than the Mavic Pro

  2. The Remote uses Wifi Signal which may not be as solid as the Radio Signal used with the Mavic Pro

  3. It’s limited to a 2.5 Mile Range instead of the 4 Mile Range of the Mavic Pro

  4. It’s got a 21 minute Flight time vs the 27 Minute flight time of the Mavic Pro

 

Even with these disadvantages, I still much rather have the Mavic Air because I can fit it in my pocket.  That convenience will allow me to take it along to more trips and actually fly the darn thing!
